Time To Spread my Wings and Fly!After reading articles on my specific discourse community, it was time to take the next step, and that was contribiting to the conversatioon. I did that by discovering a research gap. My audience is freshman film students or just early film students. The best way to reach them is by entertainment of course making the subject of film serious and fun.
THE RESEARCH I’ve noticed a lot discussion of Hollywood and Independent marketing and of how budgets are different and how production as well as writing and actors differ, however I haven’t heard any discussion of the way each film is publicized and if that would make a difference in the success and marketability of the film. Basically, of all the articles I’ve read, the conclusion made on the subject of independent film exposure is that external factors rather than intrinsic worth control reputations in the industry. (Kapis 1992; Kolker 1980) If I were to research this topic I would use four different productions, two Hollywood, two independent. That would make two sets of Hollywood/independent movies. One set would be my control, meaning that I would not interfere with the production of either one of those films. The other set of Hollywood/independent movies the only thing I would interfere with is the marketing/publicity factor. The Hollywood film would be given minimal advertisement besides shown in few select theaters or at film festivals and the independent film would be shown on television commercials and street ads, and shown in most major theatres. From there I would test the popularity of each film. However, my main focus would be whether the independent film is popular with the mainstream audience and if the Hollywood film is popular with the independent audience. I would use the control group to measure the differences between my experimental groups. The Limitations

The Question...Ever wonder how your favorite movie became your favorite movie. Many of us don’t. We like the movie... but we never know why. That is because, in a way, we were asked to like it. Yes, we were asked to like it through advertising techniques such as, television/internet commercials, billboards, radio ect. The only reason the movies were able to do this is because this is what their budget allowed. My question is that if an independent film was given that same budget for advertising would it becomes your favorite movie as well?
The Findings!Instead of Budgets being the main reason for success... I found out surprisingly that, the success of Blockbuster films are due largely on Budgets, But independent films on their ingenuity.
