I enrolled into this class straight out of High School, meaning I didn't take the 1101 class. (AP exam exemption)
I must say on the very first day of classes, which was also my very first day of college... I was throughly was surprised.
The class was not at all what I expected, I didn't know (what seemed like) any of the terms my professor was referring to... (Words such as genre, framing, discourse community, and annotated bibliography)

IN FACT - My face greatly resembled the blinking wide-eyed vacant clueless expression of Ms. Audrey Hepburn shown to the left in the 1963 film "Charade"
Initially, I was shocked at how flagrantly different the class was from the two AP English classes I took in high school which were SUPPOSED to be "college courses" I even adressed the possible reason why high schools would lie about the benefits of AP... and I found the answer... money... Anyways Back on topic! Apart from my initial shock... I found this class to be more worthwhile and beneficial to my future then ANY ACADEMIC class in high school... (Because T.V. Production and Drama were very beneficial in high school to my future achievements) |
REFLECTION TIME!All in All... the class has been a very pleasant experience for me!
Not only do I feel like I actually learned something... I truly feel like everything I did in this class held a purpose to my college career! This meaning... Not only did I learn MANY new things, I will actually use... more than likely... this new acquired knowledge in the near future! Ah... Nostalgia... (CONT.)
After the Genre Analysis and Annotated Bibliography the progression moved onto the Literature Review Paper. This paper required me to acquire a position in the discourse community and suport it with evidence found though my participation in the discourse community (Which was reading the articles of the key players of this conversation) I thought this assignment was very helpful towards my learning of college writing. Throughout this year, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at this course. It wasn’t at all what I expected out of a college English class. And also the writing is more of a "I don’t quite know how to describe it" style. Less formulaic and more informational and analytical with a little bit of you’re own style. Anyways back on the topic of the Literature Review! My Annotated Bibliography helped exponentially on this project! I even used the introduction from it as part of my introduction in my literature review. This was much easier than the annotated bib, and had much less writing, however what I loved best is because I took the steps of doing the Genre Analysis and then Annotated Bib. my Literature Review was clear focused and easily well written. |
Ah... Nostalgia...I'll start by reflecting upon the first large assignment we had to do in ENC 1102.
It was called the Genre Analysis paper. After reading, analyzing , and writing a journal entry on the essays of Bawarshi,Devitt, and Reiff. (In which the scholars discussed different interpretations of the appropriate definition of Genre and such) Before reading this we'd already read Swales essay in which he explains throughly the definition of a discourse community. It was now MY turn. I had to look up articles in my specific discourse community and you guessed it ... analyse it. By doing the Genre Analysis and actively looking up articles on my specific discourse community of Film, I not only became more informed on the topic of my specific discourse community but I also learned the lexis involved with my specific genre within the community. Such as the word “Art House” I hadn’t known it before, but I created a definition which seemed correct by just using textual clues from the articles containing the word. I felt the Genre Analysis assignment enhanced my very, very small expertise knowledge of the subject of Film. One thing I loved about my specific professor is that she tailored the course so that each assignment was progressive Nothing we did felt like unnecessary busy work. After doing the Genre Analysis we moved on the the Annotated Bibliography... which involved reading and analyzing many different articles like the genre analysis... though including citations. HOWEVER....IN THE END.... I think the Annotated Bibliography was quite fun. There... I went straight to the point. It was hard work fininding just the right articles. At first I had tons of articles... a little over twenty. I didn’t use them all. I summarized some of them, made mental notes of others, but ultimately I tried to really narrow it down to ONLY the articles that would bolster my future argument ( of the Lit Review). This way, when I look back at my analysis of the articles I chose for my bibliography, it would be a breeze forming and writing my aurguement. |
AND THAT'S A WRAP!!!!
And that concludes my reflection of a lovely semester... of a pleasantly surprising... ENC 1102 class.
I believe I am deserving and confident of an A in this course.
Not only did I complete every assignment, but I did so with determination, confidence , passion and an open mind... Not to mention I completed them adequately and effectively!
